British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
