The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
