Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Instructed to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has confirmed that the MoD is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified information in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made cars.

He stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The wider defence environment underscores the importance of strong measures and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
