Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
